CASE 1: JSong Collection

1.2 Project Background

 

JSong Collection (JS) likes other SMB organization, they’re using email system for external communication such as reply client enquiry and order confirmation as well as internal communication e.g. design draft sharing and work order instruction. From an accident on 2009, one of its major designer’s computers was not recoverable from water leaking damage. This accident alerts JS to review its email system security and backup. The consulting company suggested JS to migrate existing email system to business class system MS Exchange. The suggestion made JS a headache as it is almost 10 times costly and the backup operation may not able to be handled by their non-technical staff.

 

1.3 Project Challenges

 

JS is a clothing professional company, they do not plan to hire high profile IT staff. The stability of the new solution and less-human intervention is the key point of their selection. Other concerns are they don’t want to change the user habit as well as the return of investment (ROI) of the solution.

 

1.4 Project Solution

 

After a few weeks study, JS selected MBackU for their solution as MBU is compatible with their existing email system and requires no manual backup operation. MBU took 3 days to go live after the delivery. JS installed MBU-110 just next to their email server. MBU-110 is configured to access their email system within internal network and perform backup operation every 5 seconds. The solution can supports over 2 year growth with plan to grow 0.4GB daily.

 

1.5 Project Review

 

MBU Tirry re-visited the JS after 4 months from go live. Kenton (CEO of JS) claimed that they migrated all history mails to MBU in 2 months, and now, MBU stored 295GB emails which started from around 200GB. Currently, only office heads of the offices response to restore and check the backed up mails. He planned to release the right to the users as MBU provides self-service function. And, he felt very surprised about MBU's speed as he can immediately check the email when it just arrived in the email server a few seconds ago.

2.2 Project Background

 

As a listed company in HK from 2004,  they setup offices in mainland China to capture the business opportunities in the fast growing market but many problems were then emerged. PRC offices frequently reported lost of email data due to crash of computer or similar issues. As the data is very valuable to the company, so they setup a remote site to prevent the data lost. For a year email accumulation, the remote site stored 400GB or more emails. The performance of the site was crazily slow even seems to be not working at all. The worst case happened just after it had been installed for a few months that the remote site became unstable and unable to store email for backup purpose.

 

2.3 Project Challenges

 

After searching around with all world-class backup solution vendors, MBackU is the only vendor to commit migrating of their history emails and guarantee a quick searching response for their 7 years emails accumulated. They also required the searching performance to b within a reasonable time as well as not to maintain two sets of user login for the backup solution and mail server.

 

2.4 Project Solution

 

They tested MBU in the way of its storage scalability, searching performance and security. MBU passed all their tests and made a performance record of 4 seconds to complete the searching of 98GB emails. They decided to implement MBU to replace the existing backup site. The implementation took 4 business days to complete with professional from their companies and MBU. It includes migrating 388GB history email plus non-stop replacing of the backup service. MBU pulls the email for backup in every 2 minutes.

 

2.5 Project Review

 

Ernest, the MIS director of the company, stated that MBU not only delivered a stable and scalable mail backup system but also gave them an idea that it is not just a backup but archive and even becom a part of knowledge for their company. MBU got a very good comment from their user side and he won’t hesitate to extend to other sectors of the organization if budget is available.

CASE 3: Zhuhai Zhongfu Industrial Co. Ltd.

3.2 Project Background

 

Zhuhai Zhongfu (ZF) is a fast growing company in China. In 2008, ZF was acquired by a foreign VC and became the first listed company in China that owned by foreign investor. IT value was also being recognized starting from this event. After the implementation of a huge difficult corporate email system, their nightmare came. Kenny, CIO of ZF, said that they were facing the world's problem. The email archive size grew increditable from beginning of 300GB to 600GB in just 6 month time. This size made them impossible to have daily backup and the backup became un-searchable. Kenny finally found MBackU, he hoped that MBU can solve their “world's problem”.

 

3.3 Project Challenges

 

ZF scenario is very complicated. ZF had remote users using POP3, with Spam, Firewall concerns, security problem, different levelsof access right requirements and so on. Those were new challenges to MBU. Finally, MBU signed contract with ZF and commit to deliver new version to support all requirements ZF raised.

 

3.4 Project Solution

 

This contract leaded both MBU and ZF team busy for 4 months implementation and 2 months intensive testing. Eventually, this project lived on schedule. The live testing was also passed after a month of time and ZF rollout the whole project within following two months. Below listed the new features for ZF:

  •  Mail sending using SMTP directly which is not through the Exchange server (e.g.mail client sends via Spam Firewall) that is captured by MBU
  • Swapping new database when the database is full automatically.
  • Super user functions which elimates the right of system administrator for viewing others' emails
  • Backup e-mail

3.5 Project Review

 

The ZF technical director made a speech in the celebration dinner with MBU:

“1,000 people told you it can only be like that and if you think it is what the world can do, then no miracle will happens to you. Just like the MBU case, nobody believes we can make it happens before, but miracle really happened on us. That’s why we are here to celebrate.”
